Océ (2015 – present)

When Océ was acquired by Canon, the focus of the company shifted from making printers for offices to higher-speed printers for factory-scale environments. The Océ-brand was retained for its value in these markets. A new form language was designed to show industrial and modernist values with inspiration derived from architecture rather than consumer electronics. This reflects the longevity and reliability of our brand. The new style included new product colors and branding.

As part of the Océ Product Design team, I designed the new form language and represent the usability and ergonomics of our product portfolio. This encompasses physical interaction such as filling paper or ink, but also takes into account any actions an operator has to do to create his final application.

Berco (2013-2014)

Berco produces automotive interior parts and also has an own R&D department, where I worked as a design engineer. My main task was to work out the feasibility and implementation of ideas conceived by our customers – in close cooperation with their design departments.

Although Berco’s products are low on technology, they face quite some functional demands (e.g. to pass crash tests) that are complex to marry with the equally high comfort and aesthetic demands. Because Berco’s R&D is one staircase removed from their factory floor, there was a close collaboration with the production engineers in implementing Design for Manufacturing principles.

Motorett (2014-2015)

The Motorett is an electric alternative to urban mobility. We figured electric bikes were too conventional and set out to create a design that can be a head-turner in the city. A giant task resulting in a giant autoped. The Motorett is powered by an in-hub electric engine that propels it to a maximum speed of about 25 km/hour. It can drive for up to 90 minutes on its batteries, which are hidden below the wooden stand. This wooden stand is support by a spring, so that it can bounce playfully during driving, giving the Motorett a cruising experience.

Although the Motorett is awe-inspiring by its sheer size alone, the best ‘Disney Magic feeling’ occurs when it accelerates away at your depature or at a traffic light. The sudden realization that the autoped is electric will leave fellow cyclists and pedestrians baffled. The Motorett was exhibited on the 2015 Dutch Design Week.

Conceptual work (2011-2017)

I feel strongly about the value of conceptual work. It often is the uncompromised visionary ideas which need to be created first before a fit towards a viable product is attempted. Without this vision as a bull’s eye to aim for, innovations tend to be incremental. Unlike Motorett (previous page), most daring concepts stay at the drawing table or behind the veil of corporate NDA. Here’s a collection of rights-free work for competitions and for fun. A persuasive presentation to me is as important as the idea itself.
